With April being Oral Cancer Awareness month, we found it important to bring awareness to one of the most predominant campaigns aiming to eradicate this disease, the CHECK YOUR MOUTH Campaign. Focusing on early detection, this campaign educates both adults & children alike on the warning signs of oral cancer, and what symptoms they should look out for. Find out more about the campaign here:
If you’ve been following our April blog posts, you know our focus is on oral cancer, and the chaos it can create for so many people. In fact, one person dies every single hour of every single day. Launched by the Oral Cancer Foundation (OCF), CHECK YOUR MOUTH aims to teach people what tools are needed and how to adequately perform checks for suspicious tissue changes in their mouths. As is the case with many ailments, early detection is the best line of defense.
The campaign’s website walks you through the items needed to do your self evaluation: a mirror, a throat scope, and a light source. Once all tools are collected, the site takes you through the step by step process of how to use these tools to get a good look at the areas to scope out. What a person performing a check needs to look for most is any red or white tissues, any swollen or persistently painful spots, or any hard spots that were previously different.
As always, self exams are best paired with regular dental check ups, where a professional can fully scan all areas for warning signs, but this campaign is doing a great job to teach those the importance of self checks in addition to a persons dental visits!
