With the fiestas quickly approaching, we here at Dental Center of Mesa wanted to send a quick reminder to the Valley to not only have a safe holiday celebration, but to think about their oral health as well when celebrating. Before preparing your regular Mexican recipes, here are some healthy swaps for the traditional (yet sometimes sugary!) treats, and a few things to take into consideration prior to!
As we all know, too much sugar can be toxic to your teeth. In a Cinco de Mayo margarita, you can sometimes find yourself drinking your daily value of sugar in only 1 drink. Instead, try swapping the sweet, blended margarita, try a recipe that only uses fresh lime, tequila, & Triple Sec for a drink that is still as festive, just without the sugar. (Adults only!)
Besides cutting things from your celebration, we want you to make sure that your teeth are also diving into some of the fun. Although not always friendly to your diet, cheese is certainly beneficial to your teeth! The calcium & phosphates found in cheese help remineralize your teeth – so when wondering if you should add a pinch of shredded cheese to your taco, we might just nudge that pinch onto your plate!
Another thing to take into consideration before a Cinco de Mayo party is who will be in attendance. If you have people with braces, make sure that they have options too! Sometimes, a crunchy taco or taquito is all thats needed to loosen a bracket from someones tooth, and that is never fun to deal with afterwards. Be braces friendly, and consider soft tacos in addition!
From all of us here at Dental Center of Mesa, we hope you have a very fun, a very SAFE, and a very dentist-approved holiday celebration.
